范文

Dear Professor Cook,

It is such an honor for me to receive you here in Hangzhou, one of the most dynamic cities in China. In order to have you enjoy most of the city’s charm during your short stay here, I would like to recommend two scenic spots for you.

Topping my recommendation is West Lake, a must-visit for anyone visiting Hangzhou. The lake, surrounded by numerous ancient and modern architectures, boasts of a thousand-year long history with a beauty that brings travelers into an ecstatic state of peacefulness. The second destination for you, I suggest, should be Lingyin Temple, one of the most renowned Buddhist temples in Southeastern China. The holy place will help guide you through troubles and enable you to better think about your own existence in the world.

I do wish that you will enjoy your stay in Hangzhou, and I am looking forward to seeing you soon. (149 words)

Yours sincerely

                    Li Ming

The set of cartoons impressively portray an ironic scene where a man who possesses a whole bookshelf of books only plans to finish reading twenty of them. Just as the caption below indicates, “owning books” is by no means the equivalent of “reading books”.

Sadly for our age ad society, the accessibility and availability of smartphones has to a large extent deprived us of the initiative of reading paper books. For those with a stressful workload, the mere touch of the works by Shakespeare or Milton is a luxury, although the group may be collectors of books themselves. Besides, even students, who are supposed to be the most intimate lovers of books, are getting estranged from reading paper books as many have fallen addicted to the fast-food news ad pointless cyber interaction with their friends. It seems that this fast-paced age is eroding our society, turning it into a “bookless desert”.

This must be stopped! All social forces, the government, media and every member of society should realize that books symbolize the civilization of our society and if every member of society could read a tiny bit more books than he/she has ever done, our society will be more prosperous and civilized.(202 words)
